Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of DuVernay's daughter took place on the 24th day of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art through the aunt Denise. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse so that she could have the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt showed her to DuVernay. DuVernay learned the art of being a good vehicle for political activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Although DuVernay lived living in Compton with her parents, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become interested in production for the broadcast media. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked look over the rubbish at the home that belonged to a member on the jury. After being disappointed in journalism due to the work she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. She was hired in 1999 and founded her own company of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
